Design tips for AI creators.

AI tools give us infinite canvases, but they don't always know how to make a piece feel balanced and alive. That's where timeless design principles come in, the same ones that made Da Vinci's sketches pop or Bauhaus posters timeless. These aren't rules to follow blindly. They're tools to guide your prompts and refinements so your creations don't just look good. They pull people in and hold them there.

Balance. Symmetry versus asymmetry for emotional weight. Symmetrical for calm and power (think a centered dragon in a throne room). Asymmetrical for tension and story (off-center figure leaning into the wind). Prompt with "balanced composition, asymmetrical weight pulling to the left" or adjust in post to shift elements. It keeps the eye moving without confusion.

Contrast. High versus low for drama and focus. Not just light and dark. Contrast textures, sizes, colors. AI loves uniformity. Fight it with "high contrast between rough stone foreground and smooth sky, sharp vs soft elements." This creates pop and guides the viewer to what matters most.

Emphasis. Make one thing the boss. Everything can't be the star. Use color, size, or isolation: "emphasis on the glowing eye, subdued background details, focal point dominating the frame." Inpaint to dim distractions. Your piece gains purpose instead of overwhelming.

Rhythm. Repetition with variation for flow. Like waves in a Van Gogh sky, repeat motifs but twist them. Prompt "rhythmic repeating patterns in the vines, varying scale and direction for movement." It gives energy without repetition feeling boring.

Proportion. Scale relationships for impact. Play with realistic versus exaggerated: "exaggerated proportions on the giant's hands, tiny figures at the feet for scale, dramatic size contrast." AI can warp this easily. Use it to evoke awe or intimacy.

These principles aren't about restricting AI. They're about giving your generations direction so they feel designed, not default.
