Lesson 21
Traditional tips, part two
Traditional art tips for AI artists. Part two of borrowing from the old masters to make our generations hit harder.
The models are incredible, but they still need us to guide them with principles that have worked for centuries. These are five more I lean on constantly, different from the ones we covered before. Small nudges that turn good renders into pieces that linger in the mind.
Unity and variety. Everything connected, nothing boring. Great art feels like one whole, but with enough differences to stay interesting. AI can make everything too uniform. Prompt "strong visual unity through repeating motifs and color echoes, balanced with varied textures and shapes for interest" or post-process to link elements. The piece feels cohesive yet alive.
Rhythm. A visual beat that guides the eye. Like music, art needs flow. Repeating elements with variation create movement. Models scatter details randomly. Try "rhythmic flow with repeating curved lines leading the eye through the composition, varying size and spacing for natural rhythm." Think winding rivers echoing dragon tails.
Movement. Directing the viewer's journey. Lines, shapes, and poses pull the eye across the canvas. AI often makes static scenes. Add "strong directional movement with diagonal lines and implied motion leading from lower left to upper right" or "figures in dynamic poses creating sweeping visual paths." The image feels like it's going somewhere.
Proportion and the golden ratio. Classic proportions (like the golden spiral) feel naturally beautiful. AI defaults to even spacing. Prompt "composition following golden ratio spiral, main subject placed at intersection points for harmonious balance" or crop in post to align key elements. Suddenly everything feels right.
Harmony. All elements singing together. Colors, shapes, and moods in agreement create peace. AI can clash accidentally. Use "harmonious color scheme with analogous tones and subtle complementary accents" or "shapes and textures in visual agreement for serene mood." The piece feels complete, not chaotic.
These are the quiet guides that turn AI's raw power into something intentional. Pick one for your next gen. It's amazing how much depth a single principle adds.
